Kwinana School Program (KSP)
The Kwinana School Health Program provides local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with access to Health Education, Child Health Checks, GP’s, Specialist and Community Services. The Moorditj Koort Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP), supports and monitors the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students enrolled in chosen schools. We strive to prevent and reduce the number of chronic illnesses seen in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
How does it work?
At the commencement of each School Year, the Moorditj Koort Aboriginal Health Practitioner presents at the school to deliver annual program consent forms for distribution to student’s parents/guardians for completion.
The Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP) liaises with the school Aboriginal Indigenous Education Officers (AIEO) to ensure School Program consent forms are collected from students. Once receiving program consent forms, the Moorditj Koort Aboriginal Health Practitioner liaises with the school and GPs to arrange a suitable visiting time to perform child health checks.
What checks to the children get?
On the Health Check Day Nakita, our friendly Aboriginal Health Practitioner; performs health checks on the children’s eyes, ears, skin, hair, teeth, weight, and height and asks several questions about their general health sleeping and nutrition. Upon completing the health check, the child will receive a complimentary Moorditj Koort Health Promotion Backpack:
What happens if the Aboriginal Health Practitioner identifies a health issue with my child?
The Program Aboriginal Health Practitioner liaises with local Medical Centres and GP’s, to arrange follow up visits within the schools. The doctor will firstly review the child’s Health Check Letter and comprehensive 715 Health Check assessment, followed by an assessment of the child.
If required, the Aboriginal Health Practitioner will assist the child/families with support by linking into specialist services such as: Audiology, ENT, Dietitian, Diabetes Educator and Paediatrician.
